After a less-than-stellar return to the stage at last year’s MTV Video Music Awards, Britney Spears has been working her tush off to get her career back on track. But what would be the best way to redeem herself? Blowing away the audience has she had done many times before (her strip tease to Oops…I did it Again and the Madonna Like a Virgin kiss performances are both infamous!) at the very same MTV award show. "Everyone deserves a second or third chance, right?" says Van Toffler, president of MTV Networks Music Group. When asked if he was kidding about getting Spears on board for the September 7 award show, Toffler said, "Sorta. Who knows?"
While perhaps reluctant to invite Spears back for a repeat of her disastrous turn last year, the fact of the matter is, Spears is still a major draw. Had anyone even heard of the sitcom "How I Met Your Mother" until Brit had a successful cameo? Exactly. "I'm not sure how we top Britney opening the show," says Toffler. "We are working on it every minute of every day." This year's VMAs will air live from Paramount Pictures Studios in Los Angeles on September 7.
