Titanic's hot celebrity Kate Winslet took over Aussie's pride Nicole Kidman as the lead actress in the romantic-drama flick The Reader. It is due to the latter's pregnancy courtesy of country singer Keith Urban. Reports said that the role was offered first to Kate but because of schedule conflicts, it was then passed to Nicole. All good things comes along the way for both of them. Meanwhile, the movie is about a young man's obsession for an older woman in a post-WWII war as he face dilemmas brought about by his discovery of an awful truth.
A BAFTA award-winner, Kate's breakthrough is in BBC's Dark Season followed by her appearance in the tv-movie Anglo-Saxons Attitudes. She then casted in Peter Jackson's Heavenly Creatures as Juliet Hulme. After that, she appeared in Ang Lee's Sense and Sensibility, a movie taken from Jane Austen's classical novel earning her a nod at the Oscars for Best Supporting Actress. Followed by the highly-successful James Cameron film Titanic opposite Leonardo DiCaprio as she portrays Rose. That particular stint made her a celebrity overnight.
She resort herself to do independent films such as Holy Smoke and Hideous Kinky not to mention "periodic" films like Quills and Finding Neverland. Apart from The Reader, she is signed to do Revolutionary Road as she reunites withTitanic co-star Leonardo DiCaprio as they plays a couple struggling in the 1950's. She will also be in Gnome and Juliet doing the voice of Juliet with the direction of Kelly Asbury. She may never won an Oscar but who knows this might be her chance to get herself an award because acting and singing-wise, she has it.
